A Christmas ball with the nativity printed into its shell as a lithophane: white plastic of varying thickness, so the scene only appears when light comes through it. Hang it in front of a window or over a tree light and the figures come up out of a blank white ball - leave it in the dark and it is just a sphere, which is half the trick.
